Biographical/Education

Amy was born in Denver, Colorado in 1967. Raised in a small town in Nebraska, Amy moved back to Colorado in 1984 and has lived in Colorado Springs ever since. Amy graduated from Rampart High School in 1986 and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Psychology. Amy has been married to Bob since 1992 and has 3 children. Her hobbies include camping, fishing, shooting and non-stop activities with her family.

In August of 2011, the Lathen Family took on a very special project as a Guide Dog/Puppy Raising Family.  Working with Guide Dogs of the Desert, http://www.guidedogsofthedesert.org/, a very special guide dog school in California, Amy and her family decided to raise a puppy to be trained to serve a sight impaired person as a guide dog.  They will love and care for Falcon, a beautiful black lab, for 18 months until he is ready to go back to school for formal training.  It is not uncommon to find any one of the Lathen clan with Falcon at their side, whether at school with the kids, at the office with Bob or under the dais at a Board of County Commissioner’s meeting.

Although they know that it will be hard to say good-bye to Falcon, they know how much of an extraordinary impact a guide dog has on the life of a sight impaired individual.  They are also grateful for the work that this school does with military members in need of their services.

Professional/Community Involvement

Upon graduation from UCCS, Amy began work at Focus on the Family. Her first child was born in 1992 and Amy left work to stay home and raise her family. Being home allowed Amy to become involved in numerous local activities and build a wealth of experience and knowledge in a variety of areas. While her passion and main focus is in the political realm, Amy has found time to work in other areas including:

Some of her work included analyzing client assessment data and writing summaries and recommendations for Senior Consultants as well as conducting client interviews and handling client marketing and branding assessments.

In January of 2008, Amy was elected by vacancy committee to fill out the unexpired term of the previous commissioner in District 2. She quickly followed that victory with a decisive win in the general election in the fall of 2008 to begin her first full 4-year term as our commissioner here in District 2. After serving as Vice-Chair in 2010, Amy is currently serving as Chair of the Board of County Commissioners.
